Blog #5: Lubrication

An important part of sex is lubrication! Lubricants, also known as lube, can promote comfort and pleasure by reducing friction between genital and anal tissue (thicker lubes are better with anal tissue specifically, as it is more fragile than vaginal tissue). Store-bought lubes are not just helpful for those who naturally secrete less vaginal lubrication: they can help all kinds of people have more comfortable sexual experiences! There are different types of lube you can choose from.

  • WATER-BASED LUBE can be used for pretty much any form of sex and does not pose a risk of breaking down condoms or silicone sex toys! Since it is water-soluble, it washes off more easily and tends to not leave stains, though it can dry up faster.

  • SILICONE-BASED LUBE is better for very sensitive skin, as it is hypoallergenic and also does not break down condoms. It does not dry up as quick as water-based lube, thus decreasing the need for reapplication. Being non-water-soluble can make cleaning up a little harder, but it can also make activities in the shower more possible! An important note to make about silicone-based lube is that it can degrade the surface of silicone sex toys, which can allow bacteria to collect in micro-abrasions. DO NOT use it with silicone sex toys.

  • OIL-BASED LUBE exists and can decrease the need for reapplication even more. However, it can break down latex condoms and cause vaginal irritation/infection, while also being more prone to fabric staining as it is harder to wash off. Water and silicone-based lubes are recommended over oil-based lube.

Sometimes natural body fluids aren’t enough to properly lubricate the body for comfortable sex, and that’s okay. Store-bought lubricants can give people the extra help they need, or just make their sex life even better!

If you still have severe vaginal dryness or sex-related pain after trying lubricants, please see a healthcare provider.
