Blog #1: Safer Sex Products

Practicing safer sex protects individuals from not only pregnancy, but also from sexually transmitted infections (STIs), such as HIV, and bacteria. Part of practicing safer sex is using safer sex products, which are made of either latex or polyurethane for individuals with latex allergies.

  • OUTSIDE CONDOMS can be used for vaginal, anal, or oral sex. They are rolled onto the penis according to manufacturers’ instructions.

  • INSIDE CONDOMS can be used for vaginal or anal sex. They are inserted into the body according to manufacturers’ instructions.

  • DENTAL DAMS are sheets that can be used during oral sex. They are laid across the vaginal or anal area. Oral sex is considered relatively low risk in terms of HIV transmission; however, having cuts or sores in your mouth, gum disease, an STI in your throat, or recent dental work increases risk of transmission.

Here are some tips on how to properly utilize these products!

  1. Put products on before intercourse, not after starting.

  2. Read product packaging for specific instructions and the expiration date.

  3. Look over the product once it’s out of its packaging for any tears or defects. Get a new one if damage is noticed or even probable. Don’t tear products open with scissors or teeth.

  4. Don’t combine an outside condom with an inside condom as this can cause tearing.

  5. Store products in a cool, dry place as they can break down in heat, light, and humidity. Don’t store products in your wallet, as heat and friction can damage them.

  6. Use water- or silicone-based lubricant to prevent product breakage. Don’t use oil-based lubricant with latex condoms.

  7. A bit of lubricant or natural static can help hold a dental dam in place. If a dam still moves around with activity, be sure to hold it in place.

  8. And finally, don’t reuse products or flush them down the toilet.
