Blog #2: Consent
Consent between participants is a MUST when it comes to having sex. Even in other aspects of our lives that are not inherently sexual, it is important to ask for consent before engaging in an activity. Whether you’re giving a kiss or getting into bed, make sure everyone involved (including yourself!) consents to the interaction. Consent to an interaction can also be revoked at any time, and everyone should respect that.
What does full consent look like? Here is a helpful acronym from Planned Parenthood: FRIES.
Freely given: stated without coercion or influence from the individual themselves.
Reversible: can change at any point in time, up to the individual.
Informed: understanding completely what’s expected to happen.
Enthusiastic: with an individual’s full confidence and comfort!
Specific: agreeing only to the activities discussed, not a free pass to do anything undiscussed.
Remember, only YOU can consent for yourself in any situation. For more information on understanding consent and personal boundaries, check out Planned Parenthood and Scarleteen!
